Day 122 - Wed 27 Nov 2019 - The pets

We take the dogs for a long walk in the morning. We were heading towards a dog park but unfortunately it was closed. We spend the rest of the day getting acquainted with all the pets and learning their names and personalities. Niels and Lucy watch a movie and the pets while Janine and Martijn clean the trailer, do the laundry, bake bread, etc.

Today: 6km - 15m
Total: 15,513km - 315h10m

Day 121 - Tue 26 Nov 2019 - A house

We have to leave the campground after lunch as another camper is booked in our spot. We're not expected at our housesit address until 6:30 pm so we head to the library for a few hours and do some shopping. Then finally we drive to our pet sit address and meet our 2 dogs and 4 cats we will be looking after for the next few days. Of course we also meet the family who are lovely and walk us through everything. Then they are ours...!!

Day 120 - Mon 25 Nov 2019 - Navigating Miami

Time to back up and head back to mainland Florida. It's a bit of a driving day today. We stop off for supplies and lunch. Janine is stumped by the fact that the shop attendants do not speak English, not even a little.

Another observation about Florida is driving style. In general traffic in Florida seems to use the road rules more as guidelines. A lot of people really drive like they are the only ones on the road... We have seen a lot of fender benders and a lot of cars with dents in the parking lots. There are also regularly abandoned cars on the side of the highways and main roads, even new ones.

The traffic around Miami is just crazy. It requires a lot of concentration but we finally safely make it to the campsite.

Today: 215km - 4h
Total: 15,494km - 313h30m

Day 119 - Sun 24 Nov 2019 - End of a road

The final stop on Highway 1 is Key West. We take the 90 min drive to Key West and park the car at Trumna Waterfront Park. We have lunch and the kids play in the park. In the harbor we can see the cruise ship Nieuw Amsterdam from the Holland America Line.

Next, we take the free circular bus around town. Funnily, we see roosters and chickens everywhere running around town. We stop off at the southernmost point in the continental USA. From here Cuba is only 90 miles away by boat!

It looks like there is a storm brewing in the distance so we head back to our trailer. Fortunately the storm does not follow us, but we do have a beatiful crimson red sunset. Some of the campers here are really getting into the Christmas spirit and there are lots of pretty lights around the campground.

Today: 190km - 3h
Total: 15,279km - 309h24m

Day 118 - Sat 23 Nov 2019 - The Florida Keys

Today we drive south off the mainland to the Florida Keys. The word key is derived from the Spanish word cayo meaning small island. This string of tropical islands was connected by rail in the early 1900s. After severe damage by the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane the rail bridges were converted to road bridges.

Before we reach the Keys, we stop off at a local supermarket. Everthing is in Spanish first, English second and we see lovely exotic produce: Aloe leafs, Cactus leafs, sugercane (the actual cane, not processed), bread fruit.

Once stocked up we go on the bridge. The temperature, beaches, palm trees and azure blue waters are textbook tropical. Unfortunately all the buildings are square concrete boxes and are not completing the picture of the tropical paradise.

We reach our beachfront campground 'Jolly Roger' just before Marathon at lunch time. Janine spots an iguana trying to find a way into our neighbors' motorhome.

After lunch we walk to the beach for some snorkeling. Although it is nice and hot in the sun, there is a distinct chill in the water. Martijn and Niels brave it and dunk into the Gulf of Mexico. They see a few different types of fish and a huge lobster hiding under some rocks.

After that straight to the pool, which is lovely and warm (heated!).

We watch the sunset but unfortunately the clouds are hiding the sun.

The Pelicans are fun to watch though.

Today: 212km - 3h45m
Total: 15,089km - 306h21m

Day 117 - Fri 22 Nov 2019 - Alligators!

Time to move again. From Naples we head to Collier-Seminole State Park which is apparently a good spot to see alligators. At Ten Thousand Islands we walk a short trail to the observation tower. On either side of the path we can clearly see the partings in the sawgrass where the alligators cross the path. We are getting a little bit nervous and are happy we do not see any on the path. From the observation tower we look out over the swamp land and mangrove trees. Technically it's not actually a swamp but a very slow fowing river. We see a few different types of beautiful birds: Anhinga, Heron and Stork. But no floating logs...

Safely back in the car we drive on and enter Big Cypress National Preserve. Next stop is the Big Cypress boardwalk. We get out with the intention of getting some information and start talking to some other people there (from Toronto no less) that point out the alligators in the water right next to the car park! We just walked by without even noticing them! When we look closer we can see an adult alligator with just the eyes out of the water. It gives us the shivers and certainly makes us back up a few paces. We look around a bit more and eventually count four juvenile alligators as well. They look so cute when they are small!!

Satisfied we head to our campsite for the night at Midway Campgrounds. Although the glamping sites are really comfortable, they do not allow open fires. So, at the campgrounds we make a campfire and grill burgers.

Today: 120km - 2h15m

Day 116 - Thu 21 Nov 2019 - Another day at the office

What can we say, another day at the office. Shuffleboard, gym, pool, oh and schoolwork of course.

Based on conversations with locals and other travelers we have adjusted our plans a little and we may have missed a day in our original plan so we stay put another night. The whole family is pretty pooped from being on the move for so long so everyone is happy to just chill on the campgrounds for a while.

Today: 0km - 0h
Total: 14,765km - 299h50m

Day 115 - Wed 20 Nov 2019 - Shuffleboarding

Another one of these great campgrounds with lots of facilities. Apart from the pool and the gym there is also shuffleboarding (a bit like curling but without the ice).

Niels and Lucy beat Martijn twice while Janine goes for a workout.

We finish off with a refreshing dip in the pool after all that hard work.

Today: 0km - 0h
Total: 14,765km - 299h50m

Day 114 - Tue 19 Nov 2019 - Manatee!

With mixed emotion we are packing up. This was such a lovely campground and so very quiet! But there are things to see and do.

We head over to Ponce De Leon Park on the other side of Punta Gorda. To get there we have to drive through one of those awful neighborhoods where every single house is on the water and has a dock for their boat. It must be dreadful to live here...

At the park there is a plaque in memory of the first recorded death of a white man in America in 1513 at Pine Island. The Spaniards were exploring the area and met the local Indians on at least three occasions. At the first meeting items were traded, but at subsequent meetings fighting erupted and several Indians and a Spaniard were killed.

We stroll on a boardwalk through the mangrove forest to the pier in the hope to see some of the advertised local wildlife.

We are not disappointed. As we talk to the fisherman on the pier we are introduced to the beautiful resident yellow crowned night heron that dares to come remarkably close.

The fisherman use life little Fiddler crabs to catch Sheepshead fish. As they start talking about this Sheepshead fish we hear a big poof of air and turn around to see a Manatee surfacing and diving back under. Of course the camera was not ready so we only got a picture of the water... but we all saw it!! What a spectacular sight! Martijn also sees a Needlefish jump out at the water.

Anyway, back to the Sheepshead fish. The jaws of this fish are lined with 2 rows of teeth they use to grind on crabs and barnacles. After a little while the fish are starting to bite and both Niels and Lucy are allowed to reel some in. We are having such a jolly time that we lose track of time.

Much later than planned we have lunch and by the time we've done some shopping we realize we're not going to make it to our planned stop so we divert to another campground in Lake San Marino.

Day 113 - Mon 18 Nov 2019 - The other pool

One thing we are surprised about is that in Florida we hear a lot of radio advertisements for smoking and vaping. We see a lot more people here smoking as well.

We've worked out our plans and campsites for the next few days. It has warmed up a little again so in the afternoon we splash about in the pool.

Day 112 - Sun 17 Nov 2019 - Retired

We spend the day with the usual activities: schoolwork, laundry, planning, etc. In the afternoon we work out in the gym and play a day of pool. After dinner we go to the clubhouse to watch Mrs. Doubtfire when the retirees roll in for their weekly Sun night cribbage game. We have a nice little chat with them and then retreat to the trailer and watch the movie there instead. This is a medium size RV Resort with about 200 sites, most of which are permanent. Florida is a favorite for retirees to spend the winter. Everyone is very friendly and we feel like we have many adopted grand parents. We meet a couple from Wasaga Beach! Right next door from where we used to live.

Day 111 - Sat 16 Nov 2019 - South again

The weather is not looking great for the next few days so we are heading south again. On the way we continue our hunt for brown flour to continue baking our own bread. It looks like brown flower is not used a lot in the USA.

Today: 300km - 4h30m
Total: 14,655km - 296h30m

Day 110 - Fri 15 Nov 2019 - Club House day

We spend the whole day in the club house. They have an oven we can use so we treat ourselves to french fries for lunch and home made pizza for dinner. Martijn uploads a ton of photos to the blog and Janine works out the route for the next few days. After the kids finish with their schoolwork for the day we play Rummikub and shoot some Pool.

Day 106 - Mon 11 Nov 2019 - Rocket Launch & Glamping

We head south towards Cape Canaveral with a small detour to see Daytona Beach.

Today there is a launch of a SpaceX rocket that we would really like to see. Then we'll head to the campsite to go and visit the Kennedy Space Center tomorrow.

At 9:45 we park up at a rest stop on the Interstate 95 to set up the cameras and start the count-down. at 9:51 we all look to the sky in anticipation... nothing. Is it happening? Did we miss it? Then Janine spots it. We were expecting a big smoke plume but by the time it gets in our view that is not following the rocket anymore. Then as the rocket gains altitude the contrail starts and it is easier to track. A bit higher still and the rocket disappears from view. Truly spectacular.

We go to Walmart to do some shopping and research and have lunch. The weather is glorious so we make a quick change of plans. We're going to hit up a water park in Orlando instead.

We find an amazing glamping campground close to the theme parks for a very reasonable price and manage a quick dip in the pool before dinner time. Yes, that is a pool in our backyard.

After dinner we go to the clubhouse to decide which park to do tomorrow. The vote is unanimous for Universal Volcano Bay. There is a whole group of lovely elderly ladies playing Mahjong and the kids get very interested in the game so they are very quickly adopted by the group.

Day 105 - Sun 10 Nov 2019 - St Augustine

St Augustine was the first Permanent European Settlement in North America. It was founded in 1565 by the Spanish for the defense of the Spanish Treasure fleet transporting traded goods from Asia through the Americas to Spain. Spain also wanted to prevent the French from settling permanently in North America after it learned that the French built Fort Caroline on the banks of the St Johns river near Jacksonville in 1562. The Spanish defeated the French in the area in 1564.

During the Anglo-Spanish war of 1585-1604 an English privateer ransacked and burned the town of St Augustine in 1668. This and the establishment of the English settlement of Charleston in 1670 prompted the Spanish to build Castillo de San Marcos in 1672-1695. Although attacked and besieged many times, the fortress was never taken by force. By stroke of luck, the walls made out of coquina (a soft limestone sedimentary rock from shells) turned out the be excellent at absorbing cannon fire.

We learned that in those time sieges were mostly preferred over assaults. It was more beneficial for your opponent to have to surrender because they ran out of ammunition and food so you could then take over the Fort and town. However, from far away attacking ships could see the well trained cannoneers reload their cannons and aim their shots up to 4 miles away with amazing precision.

The English gained control of Florida under the Treaty of Paris (1763). It became a haven for British Loyalists during the American Revolution war. It was later returned to the Spanish after the Peace of Paris (1783) who in turn ceded it to the Americans under the Adams–OnĂs Treaty (1821).

(You can lose days clicking through on all this fascinating stuff on Wikipedia...)

Unfortunately because the original Spanish town was burned by the English in 1668 and 1702 there are no original wooden buildings left from before that. The colonial Spansih quarter has been restored to the 1740s era but most of the buildings are now restaurants and souvenir shops.

Outside the colonial quarter we look at the Alcazar Hotel (now a museum) and the Ponce de Leon Hotel (now a college). Both built by millionaire developer Henry Flagler in the Spanish Renaissance style.

After lunch we explore Castillo de San Marco. The Spanish were ingenious with their arched casemates that could support heavier cannons on the ceilings and tidal toilets that used the tide to wash away the waste. We watch the cannoneers fire the cannon and the kids earn yet another Junior Rangers badge.
